Another way of looking at the data provided is to consider the prize money won per foal. In this scenario inbreeding through 2 daughters moves from being the best result to the worse result as the table below illustrates.

I can just imagine this information being used to argue that the real top performers who win the most money are not found through two daughters. I will hopefully put forward a very simple explaination to explain why prize money is lower. I think it is smply because many of the black type winners raced in South America where prize money is lower.

Dance Number is the dam of Mutakddim, Northern Sea is the dam of Southern Halo and Royal Statute is often found via Luhuk.
This shows that most of the favourable results are mainly through 3 daughets of Northern Dancer so this would be something I would be stressing if I wanted to argue that inbreeding through two daughters is a bad thing. The case to put forward would be that except for these 3 meeting there has been very little success and surely this proves that inbreeding through other daughters is unlikely to work! I would again argue that that trhinking might be a mistake. These have worked because there have been opportunity for all three strains to be found. Elsewhere in the world the number of foals where Northern Dancer is found through two daughter matings may be very rare indeed and the seemingly poor results may still be because of a lack of opportunity.
I could use the Query by Position tool to find out the statistics of how often the above mentioned mares have combined with the 3 stallions mentioned above and hence calculate how many others there. This would help show just how few others there are. However, I am not attempting to claim that inbreeding through two daughters is a better way than any other. What I want to highlight is things are not quite as clear cut as many pundits would lead us to believe.
One thing I do know for sure is that the tool I have been using to generate the information is so useful to help us understand successful breeding patterns. It could be used for so much research. For instance everyone knows that Buckpasser is a far better broodmare sire than sire of sires! However, I am not sure this is so and feel it may be another myth. I could use this program to see how he does through sons and compare this with how he does through daughters. I will definitely be giving this part of the Equineline system a thumbs up for usefulness. |
